These awards aim to recognise the finalists’ contribution to architecture and seek to highlight those whose excellent work in their career is sometimes unseen.

The three awards categories are: The Chrystall Excellence Award, the Munro Diversity Award and the Wirihana Leadership Award. The structuring of the awards and the nomination process maintains the two main objectives of Architecture+Women•NZ; raising the visibility of women trained in architecture and their association with New Zealand; and formally acknowledging the outstanding contributions of women to our built environment.

A+W•NZ, founded in 2011 and currently with 1000+ members, provides a focus on furthering the conversation and bringing women involved in the profession of architecture in New Zealand to the fore. As a non-profit organisation, A+W•NZ is committed to strengthening networks throughout the entire architectural community, initially building from the strong platform of gender for the benefit of all with championing diversity, inclusion and equity to all who identify as female or non-binary.

Celebrating the Dulux Awards will be A+W•NZ’s fourth round in this triennial awards programme, with the inaugural Awards event held in Auckland in September 2014. The awards programme forms part of a wider spectrum of activities undertaken by A+W•NZ, including research, publication, policy and events.

The jury for the 2023 A+W Dulux Awards are Justine Clarke, Craig Moller, Dr. Sarah Treadwell and Carinnya Feaunati.

The Awards presentation evening will be held in Auckland on Saturday 16 September at The Northern Club. Tickets go on sale on Wednesday 26 July, 2023.

Wirihana Emerging Leadership Award

The second decade beyond graduation is significant for all architectural careers, and statistics show that it is during this time that gender has a significant impact. This category is neither a graduate award nor a mid-career award, but is instead aimed at the career stage between those two, when women so often lose their visibility. This award category aims to maintain the presence of emerging leaders in the profession’s eye.

Munro Diversity Award

This award category is open to all genders, and aims to highlight the important work carried out by so many in the promotion of equity and diversity in architecture. Architectural excellence is supported by the inclusion of many voices, and this award celebrates the often invisible work of those that strive for an equitable profession. A+W•NZ is very proud of this award category, which it believes to be the only one of its kind in any New Zealand architectural awards programme.

Chrystall Excellence Award

There are many women who have led expanded and full careers in architecture over several decades, and this award category gives visibility to those who may become role models to younger generations and students. In addition to excellence in a body of work, this award takes into account mentorship and the contribution to the community.
