Win a silver Idol’s Eye ring
Fashion designer Cybèle and jeweller James McCarty have collaborated on a series of faceted rings, pendants and earrings in solid sterling silver opulently set with multicoloured precious gems. Cybèle’s Summer 11/12 fashion collection has been built around the story of the Idol’s Eye diamond and was an apt starting point to take the brand into jewellery.
The Idol’s Eye diamond was discovered in 1906 among the fortune of a Turkish sultan. The eye of a sacred statue (the ‘idol’) found in the Temple of Benghazi, legend has that it was given as a ransom for a beloved princess the sultan had abducted. Forty years later it made its way into the hands of famed American jeweller Harry Winston, and was then sold to Mrs May Bonfils Stanton, a widow who lived alone in her palatial mansion and who wore it, mounted as the central stone in a necklace surrounded by 86 other diamonds, to her solitary breakfast every morning.
Cybèle and McCarty’s faceted pieces imply the sharp cuts of a diamond, their geometric forms contemporary, and yet the slightly skewed angled reminiscent of ancient history. McCarty has set some pieces with an array of gemstones again playing with the drama of costume and eccentric luxury. Available from Cybèle.
