The World Architecture Festival (WAF) has announced the shortlist for its first Wood Excellence award, which will recognise a project where wood is used in an imaginative way.

From a pool of 40 entries, WAF has selected eight for the shortlist, including a Vietnamese spa resort, a jeweller’s London studio and an airport termianl here in New Zealand.

The shortlisted projects are: The Tent, a Vietnamese spa resort by a21studio Architects; The Pittwater House, a Sydney, Australia, home by Andrew Burges Architects; Earth Wind and Fire, a Vannes, France, home by Atelier Arcau; School’t Hofke, a school in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, by UArchitects;  Regional Terminal at Christchurch Airport by BVN Donovan Hill; Salvaged Ring, a Vietnamese coffee house by a21studio; Alex Monroe Studio, a jeweller’s studio by DSDHA and The Pinch, a university department in China by the Department of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong.

Architects will be invited to present their project to a panel of judges (including editor of Architecture New Zealand magazine, Justine Harvey) live at the festival in Singapore during October. The Wood Excellence prize winner will be announced at the WAF awards ceremony on Friday 3 October 2014.
