The definition of precious is ‘of great value, not to be treated carelessly’. This year, diverse practitioners will respond to the theme What’s Precious? by exploring and explaining the ways in which they like to spend their time and energy.

Feeding your Feed
Architecture as a way of seeing, thinking and questioning our world and our place in it has expanded as the profession engages in brand association, their commercial identities and with the ephemera of social media. Jeremy Hansen chairs a lively conversation with some of our city’s best designers as they discuss how they use, abuse and depend on the value of these tools to tackle contemporary challenges and get architecture back at the forefront of public conversations that matter.

Faith in the Collective
The importance of the practice of architecture as accommodating, generous and inherently open to possibility is at the forefront of this discussion. Short presentations on current and recent projects will be followed by a panel discussion, shining a light on architects and designers who place youth engagement, empowered communities and celebrating our country’s cultural diversity at the heart of what they do.

Extreme Challenges in Precious Places
UK-based architect Hugh Broughton addresses What’s Precious? from the perspective of place. Whether designing international science research facilities in the icy environment of Antarctica, or contemporary interventions in peerless heritage buildings, his practice is built on careful consideration of time and context. Hugh will discuss the architectural competition process which has led him to designing an incredibly diverse portfolio of projects, and carving out a most remarkable career path from a childhood love of Thunderbirds.
