This garden, designed by New Zealander Xanthe White, won Best Design at the Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki, Japan, earlier this year. The outdoor area is contained by charred timber ‘walls’. Inside, there is a pergola, stonework steps and native New Zealand specimens planted in a way that makes them elegant but not overly organised; structured but not the slightest bit formal. And the standout element of the garden is the vertical living wall. “What is important to me about this space is the balance of planting to structure,” says White (xanthewhitedesign.co.nz). “I believe sustainable landscape design is as simple as balancing clean living spaces with garden areas that are natural and diverse. A natural garden does not have to be overgrown but it is a wonderful way to preserve the diversity of nature.”
