David Trubridge has long been known for his dedication to sustainable design, and his recent Green Dot Award further confirms this. The Grow Range compromises of four high end kitset light shades. Trubridge explains, “A Life Cycle Analysis had revealed that freighting was our worst environmental burden, as well as seriously inflating the final retail prices.” And so the company redesigned the structure of the lights to reduce them to a single repeated component for easy assembly which all packaged down into a small box.

As well as the grow lights, the Green Dot Awards highlight some fascinating designs from a drink bottle with an internal filter to promote using tap water to a new ‘shoebox’ design created by Puma to cut waste and weight in shipping. One impressive design was for a high voltage tower in Germany. Prosaic? Wait until you see the sinuous, high-tech shape – it is quite extraordinary.
