Grimshaw has announced the appointment of David Ritter as Sustainability Lead for Australia and New Zealand, in a move towards the global practice’s net zero carbon commitments.

Working closely with Grimshaw’s Global Practice Leader of Sustainability, Dr. Paul Toyne, the practice says Ritter will be instrumental in drawing together and evolving Grimshaw’s expertise across its studios in Australia and in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ritter says, “I am excited to join Grimshaw, a global architectural and design practice founded on sustainability and circular economy design principles, and I welcome the challenge to bring my sustainability leadership and technical expertise to our studios in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand to help our clients achieve sustainable design solutions.”

As the lead for Atelier Ten’s Melbourne office from 2015-2023, Grimshaw says Ritter brings understanding of the technical challenges and opportunities that sustainable and regenerative design presents.

With a background in environmental engineering and sustainability masterplanning, and with projects delivered across Australia, China, Dubai, United Kingdom, and United States of America, Ritter has a large portfolio of work that demonstrates a cultivated understanding of sustainable built outcomes.

Ritter said, “It is imperative that we support our clients to implement systems thinking and Grimshaw’s integrated design philosophy that can deliver viable game-changing projects.”

Ritters’s experience prior to Grimshaw includes low-carbon systems retrofit for the Palaces of Westminster, sustainability master planning for IKEA, and multi-residential Passivhaus projects in China. His experience in Australia includes WA Museum Boola Bardip, STH BNK by Beulah, Monash University Gillies Hall, Cairnlea Mixed-Use Development, and Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Herbarium.

Ritter is an accredited member of the Green Building Council Australia.
