Federico Monsalve is the editor of Interior magazine and he returns this year as the convenor of the Interior Awards jury. No stranger to the programme, he tells us what he’s looking forward to in the 2020 iteration of the Awards.

What will you be looking forward to while judging the Interior Awards 2020?

Federico Monsalve (FM): Interiors from cities and provinces other than Auckland. The awards are a fantastic place to get a sense of the styles, accents, and even hints of a vernacular being explored in other parts of the country.

What is your favourite dish at the moment?

FM: Last winter I found and played around with a recipe for a fairly classic pappardelle with duck ragu, and I’m sold. Rustic, warming and, most important, even the under-10-year-olds consumed it without excessive moaning.

Name one book that has engrossed you recently.

FM: Geoff Manaugh’s Bldg Blog book is a fascinating exercise on seeing architecture from a wider, if at points completely left-of-field, viewpoint. It is political, science fiction, literary, theoretical, speculative and highly imaginative. Fiction wise, Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End was very hard to put down.

Entries for the 2020 Interior Awards open on 4 February. Click here to meet the rest of the 2020 Interior Awards jury.
