Partner content: The organisers of BuildNZ are excited to announce an exceptional keynote lineup at their upcoming tradeshow in June that architects, planners, builders and developers won't want to miss.

Navigating Better Māori Design Integration within our Built Environment’, features Debbie Tikau, NZILA member and Director of Tipu Design and Huia Reriti, NZIA President-elect and Director of +MAP Architecture.

The session will commence with Debbie and Huia taking us through a kōrero and journey with the Matapopore Charitable Trust; their first hand experience sensitively weaving the cultural design integration process with an array of emotive stakeholders and artists into better rebuild outcomes for Canterbury post earthquakes.

The Matapopore Charitable Trust was established by Ngāi Tūāhuriri to work with Ōtākaro LtdRegenerate Christchurch and Christchurch City Council (CCC) to provide cultural advice on Ngāi Tūāhuriri/Ngāi Tahu values, narratives and aspirations, and to weave these into the fabric of the anchor projects and other projects associated with the recovery of greater Christchurch. Ngāi Tūāhuriri is the local Ngāi Tahu sub-tribe (hapū) that holds mana whenua (traditional rights and responsibilities) over the Christchurch CBD.

Continuing at the cutting edge of cultural design integration, Tikao will then share a live Q&A with the audience on recent developments with respect to the built environment industry that aim to assist a new generation of architects, designers and builders to better partner with iwi/hapū to achieve outcomes which reflect our dual histories and world views.

Peter Townsend from Townsend Architects will generously mediate this highly anticipated session.

The session is scheduled for Tuesday 20th June at BuildNZ, New Zealand’s largest trade show for the wider build, construction and architecture pan-industry. Attendance to the session and general admittance to BuildNZ is free, however, seating at this session will be limited. Organisers suggest you register early at www.buildnz.com.
