It was another successful event for Irving Smith Jack Architects and engineering consultancy Aurecon who took home two major awards at the 2011 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards, held last night on Auckland’s waterfront.

The Nelson-based architects were recognised for commercial engineering and commercial architectural excellence for the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Arts & Media Building, a three-storey, seismically-protected timber structure entirely built from locally grown and fabricated laminated veneer lumber. Only last week Irving Smith Jack Architects took out the Public Architecture category at the 2011 Nelson Marlborough Architecture Awards, held in the award-winning building itself. Their design was also named amongst the shortlisted entries for the 2011 World Architecture Festival.

The NZ Wood Timber Design Awards judges described the NMIT Arts and Media building as “a beautifully integrated design solution where the design process has fully embraced structural timber innovation to create a landmark building for New Zealand”.

They received the award for interior fit-out with the judges commenting on its “visually arresting interior” which resulted in “an iconic, engaging series of spaces”.

The People’s Choice award went to Kanuka Engineered Wood Products Ltd and Structural Concepts Ltd for Red Stag Timber’s Reman building in Rotorua.
