Jasper van der Lingen

Since graduating in 1988, Jasper has worked as an architect in both the UK and New Zealand. He joined Sheppard and Rout Architects in 1992 and became a director in 2006. Jasper has been a member of the Canterbury branch of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects since 2007, the Chairman between 2010 and 2012 and National Councillor from 2014 to 2017. He has been on numerous local juries, including being the national awards convenor in 2016. He is a member of three Urban Design Panels – Christchurch, Lyttleton and Nelson – and is also on the jury for the ACE awards and the Property Council Southern Excellence awards and a member of the Open Christchurch committee. Jasper has been responsible for numerous local architecture award-winning buildings and six national architecture award winners. He received the NZIA Presidents Award in 2010 and has been a fellow of the Institute since 2012. He was part of the team that wrote and created the book “Shifting Foundations: Post-quake Architecture of Otautahi Christchurch”, released in 2023. Jasper believes a deep understanding of context; history and the culture of a place should inform and enrichen the buildings and environment we create. An awareness of our place and our influence on Papatūānuku is critical. Developing innovative solutions to how we can build in as ethical a way as possible in todays environmentally aware times is a real passion. Jasper has been responsible for many sustainable designs including the carbon zero Dolomite Point Visitors Centre in Punakaiki due for completion in 2024.
