Partner content: Developed in collaboration with heritage architect Joanna Theodore (ANZIA), the collection blends tradition with a contemporary approach, utilising her extensive experience in significant heritage projects across the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The collection comprises 48 authentic heritage colours curated into eight palettes, each showcasing six colours. “The goal was to bring a fresh approach to heritage design,” says Theodore. “Using the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range, we were able to create schemes that were both inspired by New Zealand’s landscapes while also historically accurate to important periods of its history.”

For those venturing into the restoration of a heritage home or seeking inspiration for a renovation project, the collection presents a diverse range of options catering to various tastes. “From early 1830s cottages through to 1930s Art-Deco buildings, this collection has something suited to all styles,” says Theodore.

Offering choices suitable for both interior and exterior applications, the palettes are crafted to complement different styles of New Zealand heritage architecture.

Theodore explains that when working with a heritage building, you may want to reinstate or draw inspiration from the original colour scheme, which can be done by scraping back paint layers, researching archived images of the site or looking at similar heritage buildings. However, in cases where there may not be evidence of the original scheme, this collection is able to provide inspiration and guidance.

The palettes include:

1. River Valley: A rich, emotive colour scheme drawing inspiration from the mid-19th-century designs, featuring greens, creams, and burgundies.

2. Ancient Forest: Inspired by towering kauri trees, this timeless scheme echoes the Gothic Revival architecture of the 19th century, ideal for traditional villas.

3. Limestone Arches: Inspired by the limestone arches of the upper South Island and is especially suitable for larger, commercial heritage buildings as well as any stone or rendered buildings.

4. Tussock Plains: Capturing the warm colours of the Victorian era with powdery pinks, mid-tone dusky pinks, and coppery tans inspired by the soft, warm colours of vast tussock plains.

5. Rocky Shore: Referencing the early bungalow era, this palette features light to mid-tone browns paired with grey-blue hues, accentuating architectural details with natural materials.

6. Bushy Bay: Drawing inspiration from the dense native bush and ocean openness, this fresh Art Nouveau-influenced colour scheme presents warm neutrals, deep blues, and mossy greens.

7. Sandstone Cliffs: Inspired by the dramatic sandstone cliffs along the rugged coastline, it features pale greens, sea blues, and warm greys, reminiscent of the early Art Deco period.

8. Coastal Dunes: Reminiscent of New Zealand’s vast sand dunes and sculpted islands, this stunning palette comprises rich browns, blush tones, creams, and gold accents inspired by the Art-Deco era.
