Rowena Roberts’ office
Office of Red Honey, Auckland, New Zealand.
This is the office of Red Honey. Run by Rowena Roberts – wife of Saatchi and Saatchi CEO Kevin Roberts – the company retails MAC cosmetics and Jo Malone fragrances in New Zealand. As a nod to Kevin’s Lancashire heritage, many of Rowena and Kevin’s interests are named with some reference to ‘Red Rose’.
When naming this company they decided to run with the red theme, and honey came from Rowena’s maiden name Honeywell. As soon as Rowena found the space she called Derek Lockwood, director of design for Saatchi, who designed the space for her. His first dictate was to say no to the charcoal carpet being rolled throughout the entire newly renovated building. Instead, the knocked-about concrete floor was polyurethaned with delicate illustrations of honeycombs etched into the surface. He picked up red from the name, and ran with it.
The office then is a blast of playful and exuberant colour. Pleated red acoustic panels line the ceilings, with red accents in everything from the rubbish bins to the bespoke Union Jack rug. Rowena chose the lip couch – perfect being both red and tying in with MAC, as well as the heart chair. She didn’t want traditional desks, so Derek designed large tables for the space in the same look at the kitchenette along the back wall. Going to the office has never looked so fun.
