As an architecture grad and now furniture designer I'm pretty much in that same category - I usually get a lot of alcohol, photoframes, notebooks and jewellery.
I think most design snobs make good designers, and something that could work well is a gift voucher to a design store or a 'custom made' furniture store like www.evolvex.com.au where they can design their own.
