Architect Virginia Kerridge has transformed these original stone cottages with contemporary pavilions, jointly winning the Australian House of the Year and House Alteration and Addition over 200m2.

The inaugural Houses Awards celebrates the best residential designs in Australia. With categories including New Houses both under and over 200m2, House Alteration and Addition under and over 200m2, Apartment, Outdoor and Sustainability, the awards give a comprehensive look at various approaches, scales and locations of Australian architecture. The variety of projects and practices also means there is a raft of ideas and inspirations to fossick away for future house plans.
What do each of these projects have in common? Underlying each of them is an intelligent, meditative way of looking at living. Each of these houses responds to the individual needs of the clients who live there, and react to the particular environment each property is situated in. What results is a selection of unique houses that are bespoke solutions for living. Details are considered, materials cleverly placed together, spaces artfully articulated and forms boldly anchored. The winners were chosen by an impressive jury who include some of Australia’s most well-respected designers, including Camilla Block, Brian Zulaikha, Kerry Phelan and Paul Owen, which also underscores the architectural merit of the final selection.
