Chef Sean Connolly’s The Grill restaurant in Federal Street, Auckland has never been shy of the limelight - it starred in its own television series when it opened in late 2011 and has since won the affection of many a food critic. But, The Grill’s latest applause comes from the architecture and design community which has recognised the restaurant’s fit-out, designed by architect Andrew Lister, with two consecutive awards. 

At the 2012 Auckland Architecture Awards held in October, The Grill, was a winner in the Interior Architecture category, and at the inaugural Australasian Eat-Drink-Design Awards in Melbourne it received a high commendation. The judges of the Auckland Architecture Awards had high praises to sing for Lister’s design: “In designing a restaurant for a business clientele, the architect has revealed himself to be an impresario of the theatre of dining. Calm, rich and inviting dining areas contrast with a vibrant arrival area, and the overt display of food and wine is intended to appeal strongly to the target audience”.
